Peking Duck @ Toh Yuen, PJ Hilton

In KL or simply anywhere in Malaysia, It’s very common to come across “Famous Penang Char Koay Teow”, “Original Ipoh Hor Fun” and even “Kuching Kolo Mee” at just any corner out of the place they originated, ESPECIALLY in hawker centres.

Alex mocks me every time I claimed it’s “fake”, and I am exceptionally sensitive when I see “Penang CKT” in PJ, which happens to be really frequent LOL but it’s true! Every so-called “Famous. Penang. Char. Koay. Teow.” in PJ/KL/Ipoh does not taste anything like the ones in Penang.

So one day, I dined at Toh Yuen, PJ Hilton (complimentary dinner many thanks to those who invited me) and like any other poor fresh graduate (work almost 2 years ady still claim to be fresh grad :P), I didn’t have the luxury to feast on Peking Duck very often so I thought the Peking Duck at Toh Yuen was superb. Flavourful, original, and less fats in the crisp, crisp skin.

Traditional / fruit flavour Peking duck roll - Loved the traditional one better as the duck meat taste and flavour weren't overpowered by the fruity taste.

Chilled salsa duck roll - Very refreshing. An awesome dish to start.

Braised duck soup with sea cucumbers and herbs - Rich in duck essence and accompanying herbs

Claypot braised duck rice with flower mushrooms - The duck meat itself credits this entire dish. Well done indeed!

To me, the most important part, which also happens to be the most sinful, was the skin. It must be crispy and juicy, and at the same time NOT oily and fatty which would ick me out.

Days later I went to Beijing and insisted on trying the ORIGINAL (this one confirm original) and famous Peking Duck, which I did.

The meal I had at Toh Yuen, PJ Hilton? Definitely comparable. They were as good as the ones I had in Beijing, if not better :)

So if they claim they serve the ORIGINAL Peking Duck, I wouldn’t say it’s fake :P
